| Miami is uniquely positioned for the best sailing in the United
States. We have Biscayne Bay with reliable easterly breezes across
gentle waters with easy sailing. To the east and south we are bounded
by the Florida Keys – a chain of islands stretching 180 miles all the
way to Key West and providing protection for sailors on the mainland
side. The first fifteen miles consisting of eleven Keys are uninhabited
and provide many places to anchor and explore. The Atlantic Ocean begins on the East side of the Keys. For about four miles to the East, the bottom is dotted with coral reefs with great snorkeling and diving among the only live coral formations in the continental US filled with schools of colorful fish. Further east, the waters drop off into the Gulfstream - a giant river of salt water separating Florida from the Bahamas. The Gulfstream travels up the entire east coast of the United States to Nova Scotia and beyond. It is one of the major ocean currents of the world. The deep purple color of the Gulfstream is very noticeable as one begins the short, 50 mile sail across to the Bahamas. Here we find a string of Cays bordering the west side of this Caribbean, an English speaking country consisting of 600 islands with thousands of coral reefs scattered among sparkling clear waters. Americans are welcomed and well cared for by our Bahamian neighbors. Lightheart Charters are available in all of these waters and beyond. A sample of trips that work well include: Evening Sunset sails on Biscayne Bay - $295 Day Sails on Biscayne Bay ½ day - $650 Full day - $850 1 ½ day overnight to Upper Keys and back with visit to State Park on Elliot Key. - $1275 2 Full days - Overnight to Upper Keys, out to the ocean via Angelfish Creek, with snorkeling on Triumph Reef and return via Gulf Stream to Fowey Rocks and back to Coconut Grove via Cape Florida anchoring briefly for dinner ashore in No Name Harbor on Cape Florida. - $1775 (exclusive of restaurant charges) 3 Full days – the two day trip including a sail down Hawks Channel and an afternoon in Key Largo to swim with Dolphins at Dolphins Plus or explore upper Key Largo. - $2550 (exclusive of restaurant and Dolphin Plus charges) 4 Day trip to the near Bahamas – Bimini, Cat Cay, Gun Cay including snorkeling on Bimini Road, thought to be part of the lost continent of Atlantis. No prior sailing experience is required for our trips. You can participate in the sailing and handling of the boat as much or little as you like. We will provide sailing lessons along the way at no extra charge if you like.
